Here is a recap of the wonderful learning that took place in our classroom, along with some suggested activities to support your child at home. This week, we also conducted our P.M. Benchmarks to assess reading progress, while students practiced independence during phonics and math station work.
🔤 Phonics
-
In Class: We focused on the primary letter sounds /s/, /a/, /t/, /p/, /i/, /n/. Students practiced reading and spelling words using these sounds, paired each sound with its corresponding action, and blended them to read 2-, 3-, and 4-letter words (e.g., sat, pan, spin, ants).
-
Home Suggestions:
-
Spelling & Reading Practice: Give your child short words made from these six letters (like pat, tin, sit, nap, pit) to read out loud, or say a word slowly and ask them to write down the letters they hear.
-
Try a “Tap & Blend” game: write words using these six letters and have your child tap each letter’s sound on their arm before saying the whole word.
-
🔢 Mathematics
-
In Class: Students practiced writing numbers 1–15, ordering numbers from smallest to largest, identifying missing numbers, and matching random quantities up to 15 to their correct numerals through hands-on games.
-
Home Suggestions:
-
Practice writing numbers 1–15 together using fun materials like finger paint, sand, or shaving cream.
-
Try a “Count and Match” activity: gather small household objects (like buttons, Lego bricks, or pasta pieces) into random piles of up to 15, and have your child count the items and write or point to the matching numeral.
-
🤝 Unit of Inquiry (UOI): All About Us
-
In Class: We explored what makes our community unique and how we care for one another. Students actively co-created our essential class agreements, discussed how our actions impact others, conducted partner interviews to learn about classmates’ likes and backgrounds, and practiced using each other’s names kindly during cooperative group tasks and morning meetings.
