Weekly photos here!!!

Our first Unit of Inquiry presentations have been completed. The students shared their Shoebox Autobiography with the class. Today we had an exhibition of our shoeboxes. The students were able to take a closer look at what everyone had brought. We made the agreement that if an item is in the box it cannot be touched, but if it is laid on the desk they may touch it. Pictures and videos are posted in the weekly photos. Students chose if they wanted to be videoed or if they just wanted pictures. As this was their first time, I gave them a choice. Most chose video, but some did choose pictures. If you noticed your child was only in pictures, ask them why they chose pictures. This was their first presentation. Maybe they were nervous or scared. The next presentation will be a group presentation and they will all be in video form. My goal is to make your children comfortable in their classroom. I am sure after this experience they will be. Next week we will conclude our ongoing unit ‘Who We Are’ and revisit it in December before the holiday. Our next unit will be ‘How We Organize Ourselves’. Next Thursday you will receive the newsletter for the next UOI.

In English this week we looked at nouns and verbs. We will continue this concept next week, as many students are still mixing them up. In phonics this week we looked at r-controlled vowels ar, or, er, ir and ur. We will continue practicing r-controlled vowels next week. Students looked at apostrophes when using contractions and when a person owns something. Contractions are words such as can’t, don’t, I’m, I’ll and wouldn’t. An example of using a contraction when you own something is, this is Leah’s car. We will continue looking at apostrophes throughout the school year. Next week we will be reading fables in the classroom. If you have any fables at home, read them to your child.

In maths we have completed our unit on data handling. Students learned about tally marks, pictographs and bar graphs. Some students are having difficulty grasping the concept more than. An example of this is, there are 4 bears and 2 kites, how many more bears are there than kites? The answer is 2. You can get this answer by 4 bears – 2 kites = 2. Or you can draw 4 bears and underneath 2 kites, then you see there are 2 more bears. Next week we will begin looking at two dimensional (2D) shapes. We will look at a circle, square, triangle, rectangle, oval, pentagon and hexagon. Students must know if the sides are straight or curved. They must know how many sides, corners and angles there are. An example is the square. It has 4 straight sides, 4 corners and 4 angles.
