Parents please encourage your children to read 20 minutes of English each school day. This is very important as it will help with their reading journeys. Reading Journals are collected on Thursdays and given back on the following Sunday. 16 out of 19 turned in their Reading Journals, however some of the journals had not been completed. Please check with your child and make sure their homework is being completed and turned in on Thursday.
During our Unit of Inquiry this week the students compared and contrasted the different countries in our classroom. Students worked in groups completing a Venn Diagram comparing Oman to another country’s culture. We looked at how everyone has a flag, food, clothing, language, music and holidays. Students were able to use the iPads to develop their research skills. Next week we will look at how culture helps people feel connected and how it shapes our identities. Students will also describe what we can learn about people by exploring their food, clothing, traditions, celebrations and language. Shoebox Autobiography is due September 20th. Directions were given on Seesaw.
For English this week we continued writing our classroom recount about indoor PE. Last week we completed the introduction paragraph and this week we completed paragraphs two and three. Paragraph two is how I bought the activity and paragraph three is about the directions given to complete the activity. Next week we will complete paragraph four and the conclusion paragraph. For phonics we have been looking at blends and digraphs as well as closed and open syllables. Next week we will continue reviewing those skills. I will also introduce bonus letters which is when a word has a short vowel with a consonant ending the word. If the word ends with the consonants f, l, or s you double that letter. Examples of this are miss, ball and fluff.
During math this week we learned about tally graphs using data sets. Students first worked in groups of four or five. Then we repeated the activity using different data sets, but students worked with a partner. Today we again completed the task using a different data set, however they worked independently, so I can see who has grasped the concept and who has not. Next week we will continue working on data handling and I will introduce the pictograph.
