Dear families,

What a wonderful week of learning we have had in Grade 2!

Students continued to settle into the school routine, develop new friendship groups, learn how to work together and, for some, experience their first ASA (After School Activity)!

In English, students have been developing their phonics, sight-word and writing skills through a range of activities and assessments. We explored the important role of vowels in words, practised identifying missing vowels and worked on correcting sentences. These activities, along with our assessments, are helping us understand students’ current skills and identify appropriate next steps for their learning. I also began conducting individual reading assessments to better understand each child’s current reading level and identify areas for future support and development.

In Maths, we continued working on our number skills by counting in 1s to 100 and in 10s to 100, as well as continuing and identifying number patterns. We also continued learning to read and interpret bar graphs. Students had a fun, active game where they had to jump up or stay seated depending on whether the information showed the most or the least. This gave them an engaging way to practise comparing data and identifying which category had the greatest or smallest amount. We also completed a pre-assessment for Data Handling to see what students already know and understand before beginning our learning in greater depth. We then collected information about things we like and dislike in our classroom and represented our findings using tally marks.

We also spent time thinking about kindness and how our words and actions can affect others. After reading a story together, we explored the idea that an unkind word or action can hurt someone’s feelings. We crumpled a paper heart to represent how someone can feel when they are treated unkindly and reflected on how our choices can affect the people around us.

Our Culture Inquiry has been a wonderful part of our week! Students brought in special items from Chile, Syria, Spain, France, Oman and Pakistan, sharing what their items were, where they came from and why they were meaningful. We saw traditional clothing, a khanjar, fabric from Pakistan,Incence burner and other special artefacts from home. Students listened carefully to one another and asked thoughtful questions to find out more.

Through these experiences, students are beginning to appreciate the different cultures and experiences represented within our classroom while developing their inquiry and communication skills.

Thank you to all the parents who sent in headphones or helped their child find a special cultural item from home. Your support is greatly appreciated.
