With Unit 1 underway, students are beginning to submit their first formative assignments through ManageBac. Formative assessments are designed to inform learning, giving students the opportunity to receive feedback and use it to improve and develop their work before submitting their final summative assessment.
This week in Grade 7, we are diving into the art movement of Surrealism. We have explored the movement through a variety of activities, including watching videos, participating in class discussions, and analyzing artworks. Students are developing an understanding of what Surrealism is, why Surrealist artists may have created their artworks, and the different techniques artists use to create work that looks surreal.
Grade 8 students are showcasing their understanding of the elements of art and principles of design through photography. We explored the art space and school campus, looking for interesting examples to photograph. Students will then select, justify, and analyze one of their photographs as a starting point for creating their artwork.
In Grade 10, we have started exploring the theme for our first artwork: memory. Students read, dissected, and discussed an article titled Understanding Human Memory before beginning to record personal memories of their choosing. These written ideas will become the foundation for their first artwork. This year, we will be approaching artmaking through a variety of different methods. This first unit is a great example of how a written text can be used as a starting point for developing and creating an artwork.
