The students and I are settling into the routine in the art room, and we are beginning Unit 1.
This week in Grade 7, we have been improving our one-point perspective skills, first through drawing boxes and then creating the interior of a room. The students have shown excellent problem-solving and thinking skills, and it has been great to see them working together with their peers.
Grade 8 students are submitting their first formatives, which show their understanding of the elements of art. We have also discussed the principles of design: rhythm and movement, contrast, emphasis, balance, unity and variety, pattern, and repetition. Next week, students will have a surprise activity where they can apply this knowledge in a hands-on activity, which will be the start of their first artwork.
Students in Grade 10 have spent their week learning the subtractive method of using charcoal. Instead of beginning by sketching out an object, they create a medium value on their paper and begin by erasing! It’s both a process and a material that is new to most of the students, and they have been very engaged in the creation of their charcoal eyes.
