Dear Parents,
We have started the school year with our Unit of Inquiry Who We Are, where the students are getting to know each other, discovering what makes each of them unique, and building a safe and strong sense of connection within our class.
This week, we listened to the story of the Colorful Monsters, written by Anna Llenas. Each monster represents an emotion. Every day, the children check in with a monster to show how they are feeling. This helps them recognise and name their emotions and become more aware of the feelings of others.
We also listened to Our Class Family. Following the story, each child decorated a butterfly with their photo. Together, the butterflies form our Our Class Family. This shows that although we are all different, we are one class and take care of each other.
For English, we have started exploring the letter sounds a, i, s and t. The students are practising the sounds, writing the letters, and using them to build their first words.
For Math, we have been working on recognising, counting and ordering numbers from 0 to 20. The children also built their names using blocks, with one letter on each block. This allowed them to count the letters in their names and compare the length of their names. We then used this information to create a bar graph, helping the students begin to represent and interpret data in a meaningful context.
It has been a positive and productive week, with lots of learning around relationships, emotions, language and mathematics. We are proud of how the children are settling into Grade 1 and finding their place in our class.
