Weekly Photos Here

“How the World Works” has begun this week. The unit flyer will be shared on SeeSaw, please take the time to look at it. So, the students jumped right in by completing a silent activity using our sense of hearing. We sat outside for five minutes just listening. I will admit, it was the first time all year not a sound was made in five minutes. The students just listened and recorded what they were hearing outside. They took the activity seriously and wrote many things on their recording sheet. We continued the activity inside the grade 2 common area for another five minutes. When returning to the class with their recording sheets we created an anchor chart of all the things they heard outside and inside. The following day we completed a KWL chart about light, but instead of the last column being, What We Learned I had changed it to What I Want to Learn. Students also wrote about what they knew about light and questions they had about light. Again we created an anchor chart recording their ideas and questions. These anchor charts are now hanging up on our UOI boards in the classroom. Next week students will complete a pre-assessment of their knowledge of sound and light, which will then be completed again at the end of the unit.

In English this week the students were introduced to prefixes -ful, -less, -able, -ment, -ness, -ish, and -en. They are displayed in the classroom with their meanings. Next week the students will be introduced to prefixes and they will learn about mis-, non-, trans-, un-, dis-. In phonics we will review closed syllables and silent e words. For writing in this unit we will be looking at procedural writing and next week students will be exposed to examples.

In math this week we focused on fractions. Students were exposed to fractions in number form, picture form, and fractions disks. They had to understand the relationships between fractions in these forms. The hope is they will be able to identify and understand that fractions are all around them in the real world when comparing things, cooking things, and eating things. Next week we will conclude our unit on fractions and following that they will move on to three dimensional shapes. Students were introduced to these concepts at the beginning of the school year when completing their unit on two dimensional shapes. They will take that prior knowledge and apply it to three dimensional shapes. Due to that prior knowledge we will spend a couple of weeks on the topic and move on to symmetry and tessellations. Please look at the unit flyer for math topics that will be covered for the rest of the school year on SeeSaw.
