Dear Robloxian Parents,

This week we have been working hard across our learning. Although we have not yet started our Readers Theatre and other performances, the students have been putting in a lot of effort preparing for them.

In English, we worked hard on recounting, as well as guided reading, and played sentence-building games to help us build stronger sentences. We also completed our spelling test on Sunday, and today students brought home a new set of spelling words for our spelling test on Thursday.

In Maths, we explored dividing and discussed how dividing means sharing equally. We practiced halving, slightly touched on doubling, and we also looked at how addition and subtraction link together.

Next week we will begin a new Unit of Inquiry, Sharing the Planet. This UOI will focus on ecosystems, habitats, and food chains. Students will learn to write informative paragraphs about a chosen animal. They will look at the food chain the animal belongs to. They will understand what predator and prey mean and what that means for their chosen animal. The students will be researching using books from the library and the classroom iPads.

For Maths, the students will begin learning about time. They will learn about half past, quarter after, and quarter to. I will review o’clock with the students, but hopefully from the previous year they will already have an understanding of that topic. Students will continue working on addition and subtraction with numbers in the hundreds, with a focus on borrowing and carrying over. This means that when the ones need ten to subtract, they know how to borrow from the tens, or when the tens need to borrow from the hundreds. When carrying over, the idea is that when the ones go over ten when adding, we carry the ten to the tens place, and when the tens go over one hundred, we carry the hundred to the hundreds place. Understanding place value is very important when teaching these skills. It would be great if you discussed this with your child in your mother tongue to support what is being taught in the classroom.

Have a wonderful weekend!
