Readers Theatre

This week’s presentations took place with an audience. The audience included Ms. Susan’s Grade 1 classroom. The kids described themselves as being excited, nervous, and happy. Sunday through Wednesday the students were given one period to practice reading their scripts and complete their props. The videos have been shared on the weekly photos link. Next week they will complete their Unit of Inquiry reflections on the creative process.

For English this week we have begun writing a recount about the Readers Theatre presentations. We will be writing a recount together as a class every week. This will help the students on their writing skills for the end of the year writing assessment. For phonics this week we looked at the /oo/ sound as in too. Students learned that this sound can be spelled as ew, oo, or o. It is important that the students understand that one sound in English can be spelled differently.

In maths we have been practicing our addition and subtraction with numbers in the hundreds. We have been using place value disks, base ten blocks, and our fingers. The students get to choose which strategy works best for them. Please ask your child what strategy they prefer to use when adding and subtracting.

Next week we will begin a new Unit of Inquiry, Sharing the Planet. The Central Idea is ‘Habitats rely on certain factors to survive’. This UOI will focus on ecosystems, habitats, and food chains. Students will learn to write informative paragraphs about a chosen animal. They will learn about what the animal looks like. They will look at the food chain the animal belongs to. They will understand what a predator and prey is and know what that means for their chosen animal. The students will be researching using books from the library and the classroom iPads.

For maths the students will begin learning about time. They will learn about half past, quarter after, and quarter to using digital and analogue clocks. I will review o’clock with the students, but hopefully from the previous year they will already have an understanding of that topic. Students will continue working on addition and subtraction numbers in the hundreds with a focus on borrowing and carrying over. This means that when the ones need ten to subtract they know how to borrow from the tens or when the tens need to borrow from the hundreds.  When carrying over the idea is when the ones go over ten, when adding, we carry the ten to the tens place and when the tens go over one hundred, we carry the hundred to the hundreds place. Understanding place value is very important when teaching these skills. It would be great if you discussed this with your child in your mother tongue to support what is being taught in the classroom.
