Practice, practice, practice is what we did for the annual Winter Concert. Today was such an exciting day for students and parents. The students worked so hard for today and for that, we all should be proud. Thank you for coming to celebrate their hard work.

The Unit of Inquiry, Where We Are in Time and Place is going well. The students have been learning about homes around the world. These homes include Rondavel, Yurt, Adobe, Log Cabin, Stilt House, Treehouse, and Igloo. Students looked at the biome location of these homes. The biomes include desert (hot and cold), grasslands, tundra, taiga, mountains, savanna, rainforest, and temperate forests. Students have also been measuring the temperature every day. They have been looking at the Sohar and Muscat temperature. We have learned that it is colder in Sohar than it is in Muscat.

In English we have completed a sound assessment this week. I assessed their knowledge of consonant sounds, short vowel sounds, digraph sounds, some glued sounds (all, am, an), and r-controlled words (ar, or, ir, ur, er). Students also completed writing a recount piece about their four day weekend. Some students chose one day to write about while others wrote about the whole four days. That was their choice, however I was looking for a title, topic sentence, and transition words such as first, next, then, and finally. The students and I  have been getting our routines established as well since my departure due to a medical emergency.

In math the students completed their number skills assessment. I can see that most students have improved and that makes me very proud. After the winter break I would like to meet with parents if they would like to. I can go over student growth and stagnation. We can work together for the students.

Next week for the Unit of Inquiry we are building houses. We have four table groups in our class. The four houses we will build are the Rondavel, Log Cabin, Stilt House, and Adobe. Please send cardboard boxes, construction paper, decorative items for the inside of their house, and anything else you think would help.

For English next week we will be completing our reading assessments for the second time this year. I would like you to support your child for their 20 minute reading sessions. Reading at school and at home is what they need to show growth. Please remember to send students to school next Sunday with their Reading Journals. I only received two Reading Journals today, the students have promised to bring them on Sunday. Please remind them.

For math next week students will be introduced to  three-dimensional shapes such as spheres, cubes, cones, triangular prism, rectangular prism, pyramid, and cylinder. Students will review measurements using centimeters. I was unable to introduce inches this week, so we will do that next week. As always we will review place value and number bonds through discussions and math centers.
