This week in literacy, we have worked on making words with the -ar, -art, -ir and -irt rhyming patterns. We have discussed our reading and the strategies we use to understand what we are reading. We are learning reviewing the difference between fiction and non-fiction books, including their particular features. The students have practised defining nouns: people, place or things and categorised them. During our writing sessions we have focused on editing to check our spelling and punctuation; we have also used thesauruses to expand our vocabulary.

In maths this week, we have continued to practise skip counting by 10s and 100s. We connected the base tens system by recognising 10 ones = 1 ten, 10 tens = 1 hundred and 10 hundreds = 1 thousand. We are learning about ordinal numbers (1st, 2nd, etc) and how to write the names of numbers. Students are writing equations using tens and ones and beginning to solve number stories.

For UOI this week, we have researched the features of homes in particular biomes which will feed into designing a home making a connection to how environments affect the structure of a home and which resources are available to use for building a home. We were so fortunate to have Ms Cendrella (Lukas’ mother) visit our class on Tuesday morning where she shared a slideshow about the home her family building in Slovakia. We learned so much about the building process, how a home needs to keep us safe and how it needs to a strong structure. There were lots of great inquiries throughout the presentation, and I know the students loved hearing about the development of a home from a student in our class.

Thank you parents for ensuring your child returned their field trip permission forms. We are very excited about our upcoming trip to Sohar Sports Complex. If you would like to join us please let me know. Please have your child bring a small bag (swimming kit size) with a snack, water and a hat. Also, please have them sunscreen up before coming to school to stay protected. I have told the students they may bring a ball, skipping ropes or other small toy to play with at the park – these need to be clearly labelled with the student’s name.
