This week we have been exploring how community and natural spaces are being used by people, animals and plants. We listed many ideas, including: camping, picnics, playgrounds, sports grounds, fishing, etc. We asked questions about our ideas and then explored how me might find out more during our inquiry.
We have worked on a new reading strategy: finding a good-fit book using the five finger rule, see below:
In our guided reading group sessions, we have been practising CVC ( consonant, vowel, consonant words) focusing on the short vowel sounds for the letters ‘a’ and ‘e’. During these sessions we also focus on particular reading and comprehension strategies related to the text.
This week in writing we have continued to focus on ideas for writing; the students have chosen one of their ideas from a list and added details to a piece of writing. A few students shared their writing with the class and we could see how they had expanded their ideas into a piece of writing.
We have been working with poems to answer comprehension questions and to find rhyming words. We discovered that rhyming words are at the end of a line in a poem and sometimes they have the same letter pattern and sometimes they don’t, ie see = bee or beet = seat.
For maths this week, we have continued finding patterns with a sequence of numbers. We have worked on identifying the attributes of 2D shapes, organised polygons by their attributes while rationalising our decisions and looked at how shapes can be composed into new composite shapes or decomposed into smaller shapes.
Please see photos here.
Upcoming events:
Monday: swimming
Tuesday: library, please have your child return their library books in good condition so they can choose new ones for another week. We have provided your child with a folder to keep their books in while they have them at home, they can use their self-management skills by ensuring their books are returned to the folder after they have read them. Students should be reading their books a few times and share them with their families.
Thursday: Grade 2 assembly, please either have your child bring their clothing, flag or other item to school for us to store or have them come to school that morning wearing an outfit which represents their culture. Thank you for your support in this matter.
