In Grade 2 this week we have worked together to build our understanding of the Learner Profile attributes. Students worked in small groups to create a poster of what a particular attribute might look, sound or feel like. Students were able to articulate their understanding through drawings and/or writing. Once each group’s poster was completed, they then present their work to all of Grade 2, developing their attributes of communicator and risk-taker.

For our UOI, we have used our creativity to design a cover our UOI books, then made a title page for our current unit of inquiry: Who we are. We have looked at books related to our unit and found facts about culture and/or beliefs. Students worked on a ‘Who am I?’ sheet which gave us more information about each other. I presented my own Shoebox Autobiography so the class had a good understanding of what they might include in their own box.

We were able to access Epic on our shared iPads to look at a collection of books which can be used for our research into our UOI.

Within our SEL (social, emotional learning) we had a lesson with Ms Maitha, our PYP counselor, on how we can be good friends which was followed up by small groups of students creating their own role play to model being a good friend.

In literacy this week, we have practised our speaking and listening skills, participated in whole class reading sessions and begun to learn about fables which is the genre associated with our unit of inquiry. We have begun drawing and writing our own version of ‘The Lion and the Mouse’. Students have also had the opportunity to read to themselves or with a friend within our literacy time.

In maths, we have practised skip counting (2s, 5s, 10s) and discussed an important mental maths activity: finding the shape which doesn’t belong and discussing their reasoning behind their choices. We have also been working on growing patterns, discussing how the patterns are growing and discovering the formula which can be applied to a growing pattern.

What are growing patterns?
