With the last few weeks of school, I wanted to find something to help our grade 10 students prepare for the diploma program while still keeping the class engaged and enjoyable as we countdown to the summer holidays. The result was a vocabulary themed competition, I have called the Vocab-a-thon. Students formed teams of five and are now one week into a battle of language knowledge.

The vocab-a-thon has focused on applying vocabulary in various contexts, adjusting for audience, and, of course, knowing the multitude of words available to choose from. Activities include formal writing, creative writing, and vocabulary games. The battle for first place remains a competition, so we will see what they produce in the last couple of days.
