Thank you to the parents who came along to our Grade 5 open classroom on Monday. It was great to have you with us and we hope you enjoyed getting a real life experience of our classes in action!
This week our students reflected on the farming methods they had learned about and used a diamond ranking system to put them in the order that they felt were the most effective to the least. They had to provide their reasoning for which they felt were the most and least effective methods. In groups students were also presented with some real life scenarios related to ethical choices behind food buying. They then discussed each scenario in their groups, before justifying their personal choices and giving their reasoning for this. This led to some great discussions and split opinions, which is always healthy in a learning environment as they listened to each other justifying their reasons behind their choices.
In literacy we started to get into debating. Students were put into groups to discuss and identify issues that they felt strongly about. Using this information, a number of debate motions were created. Students were then given a list of the motions and asked to rank them in order of which motions they felt more strongly about. They also had to state whether they were in favour of the motion (Proposition Team), or against the motion (Opposition Team). Teachers then used this information to allocate students to debate teams, and teams were given the chance to start brainstorming their debate structure and identifying 3 main reasons that they could justify with evidence.
In maths students took part in a number knowledge skills test to see their development throughout the year, and they also had a chance to review their learning of fractions with a fun Kahoot Quiz. Then some students spent time with some additional practise on adding and subtracting fractions, while other students were presented with a challenge to create some fun fractions games to help others learn the concepts that they have mastered.
We finished off our week with some role-lay and debating scenarios in the Grade 3-6 assembly. It was great to see so many of you there. Thank you for supporting your children!

In literacy we will be focusing on listening and speaking skills, as our teams start to debate, and in UOI we will be exploring how people can work together to make better choices about buying and growing food.
Best wishes, Grade 5 Team!
