What a wonderful way to end the week. Grade 2’s final assembly of the school year took place today, and I must say it was just great. I really hope you enjoyed the show. What a difference from the beginning of the year to the end. It still amazes me how much my students have grown, not just physically but mentally. I am so proud of them.
Unit of Inquiry, How the World Works is coming to an end soon, only one more week left. This week we completed our simple machines build. The students should have taken a picture and posted it on Seesaw. If they have not, please ask them to complete the task on Sunday so you can see their work. Next week we will be working on our final project. The students have chosen their partners and have started their plans. They will be making a complex machine that helps make the lives of people easier. By the end of Sunday their plans should be complete and their materials should be gathered. Ask your child who they are working with. Ask them what they are going to build. Ask them what simple machines they will be integrating into their complex machines. The students must use two or more simple machines for their complex machine.
In English we have completed our procedural writing task and next week we will begin learning and working on personal narrative writing. We will continue working on our phonics. The suffixes that were introduced this week were -ful, -less, -able, -ment, -ness, -ish, and -en. We will continue working on these suffixes next week. Our reading focus has been informational writing based on the topic of simple machines. We will complete our comprehension checking for understanding task next week. We have read the article multiple times throughout the UOI and we have answered the questions as a whole. Now it is time for them to independently answer the questions. Next week, our focus will go from informative texts to Reader’s Theatre after we complete our complex machines. We will revisit fables and short stories that the students will use for their Reader’s Theatre. The students will be combining reading and acting until the end of the school year. I can’t think of a better way to enjoy our last Unit of Inquiry together.
For math this week I introduced fractions. The students learned about whole, half, and fourth/quarter. We will continue this new skill next week. I will check for understanding at the end of next. Please ask them about fractions. What is a whole? What is half of a whole? What is a fourth of a whole? What is a quarter of a whole?
