The Unit of Inquiry, How the World Works, involving simple machines has definitely been keeping us busy. We have identified all six simple machines. We have defined all six simple machines. The next step is to build simple machines. Next week, in groups, the students will be making simple machines. The students chose which two machines they would like to build and with that information they will be put in groups. The simple machines projects that were chosen are a rollercoaster, ferris wheel, playground, maze, and a catapult. Due to the catapult being an easier build, we have chosen as a class to all build them next week. I can’t wait to see how the students machines come out.
For English we have finally introduced all vowel teams for the grade level. I hope with consistent practice this will help the students increase their knowledge of reading in English. We are now looking at multisyllabic words as well as compound words. We are continuing procedural writing. The goal with our writing in this unit is that the students can write how they built their simple machine, step by step. This week I shared an Epic library with over twenty books about simple machines. If you would like for your child to read these books at home the Epic class code is pvl0272. I will share a picture of the login instructions at the bottom of this post.
In math we have been working really hard on our subtraction skills. This week I introduced subtraction with regrouping using the base ten blocks strategy alongside the standard strategy. Students write the problem vertically then draw out the top number in base ten blocks. They the show that you take a ten and break it into ten ones. They then mark out the tens on the standard form and decrease it by one. Next, they mark out the ones numbers and add ten to the original and write the new ones with the added ten above. They are then able to subtract the numbers easily. They look at the base ten blocks and mark out the subtracted numbers with ease. I feel most students are understanding the process, but it would be very beneficial if they practice at home. Next week I will be checking for understanding of subtraction without regrouping and with regrouping.
