Good afternoon,

As we continued our exploration of water and the challenges many people around the world face in accessing clean, usable water, we watched a very short film clip called Cheru’s Long Walk to Water. Produced by World Vision USA, the film shows a young girl, Cheru, as she walks to collect water and carries it home. The children quickly noticed that the water she collects is not clear and clean like the water we have in our homes. This led to a discussion about how such water must be treated—often by boiling—before it is safe to drink. To extend this learning, we introduced the concept of water filtration and invited the children to create their own simple water filters. Using cut-in-half bottles, coffee filters, cotton wool, sand, and small stones, they built layers to filter dirty water containing sand, dirt, and leaves. They were fascinated to see the water becoming cleaner as it passed through their homemade filters. We repeated the process several times, observing how each filtration improved the water’s clarity. While we discussed that the water would still not be completely safe for drinking, the activity helped the children understand how filtration can help to clean water. This activity also provided another natural opportunity to reflect on and discuss how not everyone has equal access to clean water. You can see some photographs from this learning engagement below.

A reminder that after the Eid holidays, we will go back to our previous timetable. Since swimming will no longer be taking place, this means that KG1 will have PE on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays and that Library will once again take place weekly on Wednesdays.

We would like to take this opportunity to wish you Eid Mubarak and to wish you all a wonderful holiday. We look forward to seeing the children again on Sunday, 6th April.

Kind regards,

Kristina, Buthaina and Rahma
