It’s been another busy week in Grade 2. We’ve also had the fun of celebrating World Maths Day on Wednesday and Thursday. Some of the students were able to teach in Grades 1 to 6 new maths games and able to learn some new ones too. The confidence of these students to show their knowledge and use their presentation skills is wonderful and shows how much they have grown over this academic year.
The animal habitat dioramas look fantastic and the students were so excited to share their completed projects and well as share their animal information. After the Eid holiday, we will present our dioramas to each other and do a self-assessment against the assessment rubric.
In maths, we have been practising mental solutions to solve word problems. Some problems have the result unknown, the change unknown or the number unknown.
In literacy and UOI, we have continued working on our research report on our chosen animals. The students are describing their animal, writing about the animal’s habitat, what is eats and its predators. They are also writing a fictional story about their animal.
At the beginning of this week, we wrote our reflections of the school year for the yearbook. The students had fun thinking back over their year.
When we return from the Eid holiday, we will be:
- finishing up our Sharing the planet unit of inquiry with a self-assessment and reflection on the unit
- beginning to work with addition within 100
- joining new guided reading groups.
Reading aloud to your child is super important. Reading aloud the recommended (at least!) 15 minutes a day is doable, but what if you want to read aloud more but don’t have the time? You might need to make dinner (those kids have bottomless pits for stomachs), drive to soccer practice, or actually drink that cup of coffee.
Here’s a solution!
Did you know that audiobooks count as reading. Yes, they do! Vooks and Epic have read alouds on their sites which your child can listen to or maybe the whole family can listen to a story and then have a talk about what happened in the story. Please see some suggestion for Spring read alouds below:

Eid Mubarak to all who celebrate.
