Unit of Inquiry ‘Sharing the Planet’,  is in full swing. Students have chosen their animals and the research has begun. Research skills are very important for this UOI. Students will write a description of their chosen animal, what the animal’s diet is, who their predators are, and what the animal’s habitat is. Please ask your child what animal they have chosen. When we return from the break, we will send information out for the home project that will accompany the student’s research. The students will make a diorama of the animal habitat they have chosen.

For English this week, the students were introduced to the vowel teams oi and oy. The rules of these vowel teams are that oi goes in the middle of a word and oy goes at the end of a word. These same rules apply to ai and ay. We completed our guided reading book and this week we changed groups and have begun a new guided reading book. We continued looking at informative reading texts about animals. The students have a plethora of animal books that were shared with them on EPIC. Those books are being used to help our students with their research.

In Math this week we took out the bucket balances once again and had to find items of equal weight. The items they could use were legos, unix cubes, cm cubes, glue sticks, bolts, washers, pencils, erasers, scissors, and whatever they could find in the class that would fit in the bucket. We reviewed adding two digit numbers with no regrouping and with regrouping. We reviewed measuring length and measuring mass. We also reviewed four ways to represent a number.

When we return to school we will continue our research project about an animal the students have chosen. We will also continue reading informative texts. For phonics we will review the vowel teams ai, ay, ee, ey, ea, oy, and oi. For our writing we will begin every day with a writing activity. The activity will be done every Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. The students will be given a prompt and they will write in their writing books for fifteen minutes. We will also continue with Colorful Semantics to assist in their sentence writing. For math we will complete our lessons on length and weight. I will send a message on Seesaw about what I will be looking for from the students, when checking for understanding. What is a standard unit of length and mass? What is a nonstandard unit? Do you know how to use a ruler? Do you know vocabulary such as longer, shorter, taller, bigger, smaller, heavier, lighter, more than, and less than?

Have a wonderful week off and enjoy every minute of it.
