On Wednesday we had our second monthly parent workshop. The focus of the session was KNOWLEDGE so we started by finding images that represented the idea of knowledge to each of us; sharing our reasons for choice. ⛰
Whilst knowledge is important, our school focuses on action as a result of learning so we watched a short video by David Perkins, (Harvard Graduate School of Education and Project Zero), to learn more about what this means.
Thinking with what you know
The Transdisciplinary framework of the IB Primary Years Programme is influenced by the work of Ernest Boyer so I presented the article with an extract on language. Link to the article
From this introduction to the connectedness of knowledge across disciplines, our parents grouped together to see which subject areas might best illuminate any of our 6 Transdisciplinary themes. The consensus was that all subjects would be necessary but that in each, certain subjects might be more valuable in understanding bigger ideas.
Finally, we walked the walls of our G4 classroom to see how knowledge is contextualised by a unit of inquiry and how knowledge of each subject is important in addressing real life problems presented through the unit.
Our next session will be on Wednesday December 2nd from 11-12 noon. (Location and time To be confirmed). The focus will be on the variety of inquiry approaches that are used at ABIS to deepen understanding.
Thank you again to my enthusiastic participants ??
