Please send a pack of masks to school with your child which they can keep in their tray. Many students are now coughing, sneezing or have runny noses and we are trying to keep as healthy as we can. If your child is sick, please keep them at home to recover as we are having a continuous cycle of illness throughout the class.
The students participated in a Fun Run Challenge on Monday morning and had lots of fun. This morning we watched some of the Secondary School’s music rehearsal…it’s going to be a great concert!
In literacy, we have worked on sounding out and spelling CVC words with a short vowel sound, we have practised spelling words with the /th/ sound and are trying to apply what we have learned in writing. Our guided reading sessions have continued to focus on identifying characters, setting, problem and solutions, as well as, checking for understanding during our reading. We have work with a non-fiction text to identify the title, main idea, details and some vocabulary words.

In UOI, we have begun learning how to research where we are finding facts from non-fiction texts to answer questions. This is a very challenging skill to learn for Grade 2 students. They need to scan through a book or look at pictures to find the facts about a specific biome and the features of home built in that biome. This means they need to list the features of the biome and what materials might be available to use for building a home. Please have a look at some of these sites with your child to help them identify facts about their biomes (they should know which biome they are researching).
Our investigations with 2D and 3D shapes have continued with students identifying the properties of shapes. We have begun finding out about tessellations and looking for these in the environment.
Next week we will continue with our houses around the world research, finish up our shape unit in maths and spend some time making words using our phonic knowledge. We will also be reading in small guided reading groups or independently.
