Thank you to all the students and parents for making the 3-Way Conferences such a success. There was a large turnout and it was so good to meet most of my students’ parents. If you did not have the time or chance to schedule an appointment this week, please message me on SeeSaw to make an appointment after school.

We are continuing our Unit of Inquiry, How We Organize Ourselves for the next two weeks. Students will begin working on a class project next week, creating a community space that has a positive effect of the well-being of its visitors. The spaces could be a park, school, library, mall, etc… The students will work in pairs of three and the final drawing will be completed on a large chart paper. I am so excited to see the spaces and ideas your children come up with.

In English we have completed the Acrostic Poems. They will be sharing them on SeeSaw with you. They are currently being displayed in the classroom. Next week, we will write our Haikus. The students have begun 6+1 Traits of Writing. This program focuses on Ideas, Organization, Word Choice, Sentence Fluency, Voice, and Conventions. We are currently working on Ideas. Good writing starts with good ideas. This week and next week the focus is the topic. The topic is the main idea of the writing. A topic must be interesting and clear. A topic that is clear is easier to write about.

For math we are continuing our adding adventures. We have looked at expanded and standard form. We will continue adding through the next few weeks. I have introduced 2D and 3D shapes. The students took a pre-assessment to teach me what information they retained from first grade and what information is not known. The 2D shapes we will focus on are; circle, square, triangle, rectangle, oval, pentagon, and hexagon. The vocabulary for 2D shapes is sides, corners, and angles. The 3D shapes we will focus on are; sphere, cube, rectangular prism, pyramid, triangular prism,  cylinder, and cone. The vocabulary for 3D shapes is edges, faces, and angles. Please review these shapes with your children.
