Lots of exciting learning happening in Grade 5! During UOI and Literacy students were introduced to the 5 steps of the scientific method, and how it is included within science reports. They were able to recognise that the ‘procedure’ or ‘method’ part of science reports have clear instructions incorporating what they already know about procedural writing. Grade 5 explored different forces through a bus stop activity where they observed a force in action and had to write what force they saw and explain why/how/where the force was within the action. Students will continue to explore forces through various science experiments which they will practise writing science reports about.

The Potato Olympics continued this week with two events, Weightlifting and Downhill Skiing. In weightlifting, students focused on measuring the mass of the weights their athletes were able to balance. While in the downhill skiing event, students worked in groups to measure the distance of their athlete from the bottom of the ramp. Students had to record their answers in both centimetres and metres, which involved learning about conversions between the two units. In other maths sessions, students took time to order the class results from least to greatest which helped to find which place each athlete came in. Also, students took more time to practise conversions between different units of measurement within the metric system, as well as finding the area and perimeter of 2D rectangles, and volume of 3D rectangular prisms.

We ended the week attending the KG1-G2 assembly and were excited to see all of the learning happening within our wonderful school community! Please find pictures from our week here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1-4bODBGauVYcIo7cvgReukZ8pIUvIrmd?usp=drive_link

When we return from our October Break, we are looking forward to continuing with more Olympic events such as diving which will focus on understanding capacity. In UOI and literacy, we will continue to work on science experiments and writing the reports to go with it, particularly focusing on our procedural writing skills. We will also have a big focus on being able to analyse our results and write a conclusion of what that means related to force and motion.

We are super excited for our 3 Way Conferences which will be taking place after the break on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday! Please check the News Flash messages to sign up for a spot to meet with your child’s homeroom teacher on one of the 3 afternoons.

We hope you have a lovely October break and if you are travelling, we wish you safe travels! See you on November 3rd!

Kind regards, Grade 5 team
