Last week we finished our Summative assessments and reflected on our learning. We summarize our learning about Who We Are – Culture and compared our new thinking to what we first thought at the beginning of the unit. It was great to see how much our thinking had changed and grown.
The Summative assessment task for this unit was to write about our culture and choose symbols to represent elements of our culture and symbols to represent our values. Together we made a checklist of what we thought should be included in our writing so that the reader would learn about our culture and who we are. We then painted our 10 chosen symbols onto a flower pot. Through our words and our art, we were able to show what we learned about ourselves, our values and our culture.
In Math we tuned in to the culture of mathematics. We explored math strands and tried to sort the IXL topics into the math strands used by ABIS (Number & Algebra, Measurement & Geometry, and Statistics). Next we looked through math books to find out the language of each math strand. We realized that we have a ton of new math words to learn! This inquiry will last all year long as we continue to come across new math language and learn more about each strand.
This week we added soil and seeds to our pots! We will take care of our seeds in class and transplant them in the greenhouse when they get too big and when the Eco Club finishes the plastic bottle greenhouse.
Now on to UOI 2 How The World Works! Our topic for this unit is Weather. Our central idea is ” weather is measured so its impact can be predicted.” Our lines of inquiry are: weather patterns, measuring weather, and impacts of weathers. The key concepts that we will be exploring during this 4 week unit is, how either changes, how we measure weather, and causes and effects of weather. This week we tuned into weather by reading our UOI books. We then made questions about what we wanted to find out about weather based on our key concepts, change, function and causation.
Next week will be finding and sorting out information and will be starting to collect weather data.
Have a relaxing weekend.
