Grade 7 art students have found landscape paintings by artists which they most like and are making studies of them to learn about the painting process: how they they have been composed through an arrangement of background, middle-ground and foreground, how light works so rather than painting an object or body such as water one colour we can frequently see many reflected or scattered colours, and how the artists have used different brush-marks to mix colours and show different objects such as leaves, clouds, ripples and so on. The students are also exploring a variety of materials such as watercolour, tempera and pastels to find the effects they like best.
