Happy Book Week! This week is always one of my favorites because we get to read so many great books together. We LOVED listening to stories during our Mother Tongue morning, a huge thank you to all parents that read to the students. We also had a fun morning showing off our creative costumes during the book parade.
During our guided reading lessons this week, we focused on INFERRING. We practiced using the text, the pictures and our schema (everything that we already know), to make predictions about what will happen in the story. We noticed that sometimes the text says something different than the picture and that it’s important to think about what the words and the pictures mean when reading.
During Math this week we focused on using our knowledge of place value to help us add and subtract. We also learned how to work with a partner on a Figure It Out problem and how to record our math thinking in our Might Math Journal. We really love playing card games to practice our mental math skills, so we decided that every Thursday will be all about Mental Math Games. We were so engaged in our Math lessons this week that I forgot to take photos! Next week I will try to take some photos so you can see what Math looks like in Grade 2.

The line of inquiry we explored this week was “how culture influences our actions.” We learned that we belong to our country culture, our family culture, our school culture and some of us also belong to our religions culture. In groups we looked at pictures of different actions of people and decided which part of their culture influenced their actions. For example, people in The Netherlands bring their own bags to the grocery store, this action is connected to their country and family culture. Lots of people in Canada play hockey, this is influenced by their country, family and sometimes their school culture as well. Women in Oman wear abayas, this is influenced by their country, family and religious culture. Students at ABIS bring a reusable water bottle to school, this is influenced by their school and family culture. The cultures we belong to help shape who we are, and many of our actions are connected to our cultural influences. Our Summative assessment for this unit will be to identify personal actions that we take that are connected to our culture. At home you can talk to your child about their culture and what makes them who they are.
