This week students published and celebrated writing a research-based argument essay. Whilst drafting, students annotated an exemplar to raise the level of their writing. Whilst revising, students analyzed a peer’s work using a checklist before providing feedback. Whilst editing, students used the same checklist to fine tune and polish their writing. Then, I used a rubric to assess each student’s writing. After a plenary session this morning, students realized how their self-assessment might or might not have been in line with both a peer’s and teacher’s feedback. Which begs the question: How did your child(ren) grow as a writer throughout this process?
Using the posters that hung on the walls of our learning space as a guide, take a moment to consider what your child(ren) accomplished.
Students focused on a food-related topic to persuade themselves and their audience to take action.
Students choose a thesis or a claim with reasons to engage their audience.
Students researched and took notes about a food-related topic to choose, analyze, include, and angle the evidence.
Students concluded their piece of writing by focusing on how they and their audience might be the change they want to see in the world.
