This week we were digging deep to find out where products came from. Students were asked to examine the packaging on a number of items that had been purchased in Lulus to identify the countries of origin and production and to show on a map how far these products had travelled to reach Oman. It was really surprising to learn how far some of the products had travelled, some to more than one country, before being in Lulu ready for us to buy!
We also had a mini inquiry into chocolate: where it comes from, how it’s made, the ‘dark’ side of the chocolate industry (farmers in poverty, child trafficking & child labour), and how we as PYP students have the agency to be principled consumers and choose chocolate that displays signs that the farmers are paid a fair price.
Students have been learning a variety of ways to take notes during research, and during the past two weeks they have been using Cornell Notes to record their research into various food related topics. They then used their notes to write an argument, supported with evidence, as to why their thesis was correct.
In maths, end of unit assessments were taken and reflections made for Seesaw. There was also a quick introduction to fractions which will be the focus of our next unit.
Don’t forget, on Monday we are off to Sohar Port to look at another vital link in the food production chain. Have a great weekend! G5 Team
