The image on the right, from a Royal Museums Geenwich artist, is an interpretation of how a black hole might appear. The image on the right is a composite of many images from an array of radio telescopes that definitively proves black holes exist. NatGeo has a brief article on why this discovery is important. The science, technology, engineering, and mathematics behind these ideas is impressive.
Thankfully, the nearest black hole is too far away to disrupt life on Earth for quite a long time. Nobody would have known this after the commotion / interest / curiosity yesterday. I’m sure that some or more or all of the G5AW students dramatically reminded you that black holes exist and that because of them there’s really no need to work hard or do homework or go to school. As if … I reminded the students that I tried this line of reasoning when I was their age. The Black Hole was very influential but not helpful for my approach to learning.
Some things change but some things never change. Agency: voice, choice, and ownership in the PYP is core to everything that we do. Students explored different space-related topics to find out which one peaked their curiosity through speaking and listening tasks. Students chose the topic that will drive their learning unit the end of this unit. Students are taking / took / will be taking ownership as they work with research groupmates to convince an audience to agree with their opinion. Students’ presentations about black holes and other such space-related ideas will take place soon; barring we’re not sucked into the void 🙂
