As ever a full week!

This week there are quite a few wonderful events to share with you all!

First of all, the Ukraniacs has been a resounding success.  Miss Camp and Ms Brewer put in an immense effort preparing the children for what is quite an involved show.  The students showed their passion for theatre along with the intense and specific training from both teachers by giving a wonderful performance, that was humourous and clever; and moved quickly from act to act with a degree of smoothness and professionalism beyond what has been previously done.  The set up imitated, as much as possible, a genuine theatre, to allow students to experience as much as possible the “real thing.” Two of our primary students, Mikkel in Grade 5 and Michael in Grade 6, provided technical support and several other students worked on ticket sales and gave their time to be ushers.  The word to best describe the overall results is OUTSTANDING.  Proceeds from the tickets go to Maher, the foundation for homeless and destitute in India.  ABIS has been working with Maher for two years now and we are pleased to be able to offer more support from our wider community.  Buying tickets also gave students the impetus to raise their standards higher.  We thank our parents and teachers who willingly bought tickets – the Learner Profile was indeed demonstrated with such Caring and Principled support of our student actors.  It builds further the community spirit which has been a hallmark of ABIS since we opened.  We look forward to this afternoon’s performance as well as future shows of such calibre!

Secondly, today we see three classes working together to show their summative learning in their units of inquiry.  Grades four and five have been working on science-based units, which involve hypotheses, data collecting and presentation of their findings.  They are presenting their findings today.  There are some very interesting questions raised and students have developed a variety of ways to show their self researched answers and resulting understandings.  Making connections to their world in such a way has profound implications for their later understandings as they go through life. These science demonstrations are held in the MPA and all are invited to attend this afternoon, prior to the Ukrainiacs matinee and in lieu of an assembly.  The art exhibit is upstairs and held by grade three.  It demonstrates the results of their Artistic Expressions Unit of Inquiry.  I hope all of you have the opportunity to come and have a look at what our students have accomplished!

I asked three students from these grades about their impressions of today.  Here are their thoughts:

Maria Grade 4: For the science fair I am doing how mould can grow in different kinds of food. I felt it would be stinky and yukky and my  hypothesis was correct. This is fun and everyone is doing it and I like to see everyone’s experiments.

Greta Grade 5: I am very thrilled for Da Vinci Day because we all have different questions. Grade five is studying force and motion so if you have any questions feel free to ask someone. We will even have live demonstrations!

Tristan Grade 2: The Art Fair is to show what we have done in Art. There’s some of our projects and artistic expression and some of our clay projects that we did with Miss Celine and the mosaics and we made these faces with tattoos on it from New Zealand.  I am excited that everyone can see all our work we’ve done in class for Art.

There are only a matter of days til our winter holidays – but it is a sure bet to say we will continue to be busy and productive!

Have an amazing weekend!
