This week we took a closer look at our 6 big weather words by making a Weather Flip Book. Inside our flip book we summarized information that we found last week to make a definition for each component of weather. We then worked on our research skills by reading through a paper called “Weather Instruments” to find out what instruments are used to measure each component of weather. While we read together we focused on finding information to answer 3 questions. 1) What is the instrument? 2) What does it measure? 3) How does it work?
We read each sentence closely and underlined key words that helped to answer our questions. We then summarized our information together and wrote it in our Weather Flip Books. Next week we will be adding to our flip books as we find out what the impacts of weather are.

We also started collecting weather data from Sohar and from my hometown Saskatoon. We recorded the direction and speed of the wind, the precipitation, humidity, air pressure, temperature and clouds. We are using a weather app to help us find this information. During Morning Meeting time we have been looking for trends and patterns in our data and trying to predict the weather for the next day. Students will start recording weather data next week from Sohar and another place of their choosing. They will need to record weather data everyday for 2 weeks for their summative assessment project. We will be using our homemade weather stations and the weather app to collect data. Check out your child’s website to see the weather instrument that they made today!

This UOI is integrated with Math. We have been learning how to make graphs and tally charts. Students will need to graph their weather data and learn how to interpret their data so that they can find patterns and make weather predictions.

HOMEWORK – If it rains this weekend, students are to use a rain gauge to find out how much it rains. A rain gauge can be a cup placed outside to collect the rain, when it stops raining bring the cup inside and use a ruler to measure how many millimeters it rained.
