A couple of wonderful CAS opportunities have been started, which the school is very keen to support. The first is the ECO initiative and the second is Peer Tutoring. The Eco initiative builds on the work of Mr George last year to make the school as Eco (environment) friendly as possible. Miss Jackie Schemenauer gave a powerful presentation this morning about the importance of protecting the world we live in and the need to act now. Students responded positively by signing up to join the ‘Green Club’, which will coordinate many future activities and make a difference. It is highly probable that many of our students will become influential and we hope that that they will use their influence to improve the earth.
The Second CAS project is one that has always been close to my heart: peer tutoring. There is plenty of research that shows the positive impact of cooperative learning (especially older students with younger students) and students are well placed to tutor their peers, as they speak a common language and share a common experience. Of course they will not be replacing teachers, but reinforcing learning. In addition they will be learning how to teach/tutor, which is a wonderful life skill.
Countdown clock. In two weeks time we will be issuing a progress report on how students are progressing in their learning so far. It will be brief and focused and provide the basis for the parents evening on November 12.
Enjoy the weekend!
