This week we wrapped up our Who We Are Culture unit and started looking at our new unit of inquiry, Weather – How the World Works. We looked at our lines of inquiry and tried to figure out what key concepts we will be exploring in this unit. As a class we discovered that we will be looking at Form, Function, and Causation. Our big questions for this unit are: What is weather? (form) How do we measure weather? (function) How does weather impact us and the environment? (causation)
Students used their research skills by looking through books about weather and recording weather words in their Inquiry Journals to find out the elements of weather. Next week we will be sorting out our information to see if we can come to a conclusion about what weather is.
In Math we are continuing to look at numbers and will be learning how to collect, record and graph data during our weather unit.
In Whole Language we have been working hard to finish our Skippy JonJones stories! We took on a HUGE writing project to start the year off and learn the writing process. In UOI 2 we will be focusing on smaller writing pieces and sharpening our writing skills with a special focus on editing and spelling.
We have also been participating in The Global Read Aloud! We have been reading a book a week by Peter Reynolds and responding to the books on our Kidblog. Many other classes around the word are also reading the same books! We have been connecting with the Grade 2 classes in Kaohsiung, Taiwan through Kidblog and talking about the books together. I-Shou International School (ISIS) is where I was teaching Grade 1 previously so my new students are now talking with my old students, it’s tons of fun! If you would like to read your child’s Kidblog and comment on their reflections of the books you can access our class blog at http://kidblog.org/TheMonkeyClass-2/ You can login as GUEST and the password is …. monkeydomonkeylearn
Have a great long weekend!
