Dear Parents and Students,
As we return to our learning after our October break, this week was a short but full week of getting right back into the swing of things. Please see below for notices and highlights…
Homework has recommenced this week with a number of students making a move up in their spelling groupings. Students have also learned about code breaking, landlocked countries and problem solving.
PSPE and swimming has also recommenced this week with students enjoying the cooler weather and continuing to develop their Personal, Social and Physical Education Skills.
Reading and writing
This week after our October break, students have been working to develop their writing skills through creating a personal narrative based upon their recent holiday experience. For this, students looked at what makes a successful narrative, ‘hook sentences’, descriptive language, setting, character development, the use of the past tense and so on. Students have now nearly completed the first three steps in their 7 step publishing cycle. Please do talk with them about this because as they talk about their work so too are they clarifying and consolidating in their thinking. I look forward to sharing their published work once this is complete.
Mathematics
This week in Maths, students continued to work on developing number operations skills and knowledge. Students also completed their second basic facts assessment for the year in preparation for a direct comparison with their first assessment earlier in the year. Students will then analyse their personal growth in this area and will be able to share this as part of three way conferences coming up.
Integrated UOI
This week we have focused on completing our brainstorms outlining everything we know about flying. We also worked together to develop our understanding of what flying actually is. Our class definition of flying has now been written and is as follows:
Flying is moving through the air or space without touching a planetary surface.
Students have also begun to design and make their PET bottle rockets with the brief of designing their rocket to fly for distance. Please talk with your children about this exciting hands-on experiment where they get to apply their scientific understandings about forces and motion.
Social Studies
This week students finalised their project on the Date Palm in Oman. These will be shared among their peers next week as we work together to build intercultural understanding and international perspective.
Notice:
This week we farewell one of our teaching team Ms Eman. Ms Eman has been with us as part of our teaching team since the beginning of this year. She has established positive working relationships with our Grade 6 students as she has worked side by side with them supporting them in their learning. She will be missed and her work with our students has been very much appreciated. We wish both her and her family all the very best as they continue on their adventure.
