Grade 7 (and soon Grade 8) students have just started a special ‘writer’s workshop’ which unsurprisingly focuses on developing writing skills. The tried and tested unit goes back to the basics of writing and then evolves student writing at an accelerated pace. Over coming weeks they will be addressing punctuation, grammar, sentence types and mastery, paragraphing, etc, to ensure that all students have the same level of understanding and can take their writing to the next level. I believe that this is an important thing to do as all students join the school with different backgrounds and experiences and it is important to ‘plug any gaps’ in their learning. With a bit of help the classic line: “The cat sat on the mat” can soon become the “Feeling idle, the cat stretched languidly across the cosy mat”.
