We have enjoyed a wonderful Oman Week in Grade 3.

On Sunday we learned how to make Omani coffee and then experienced the custom of having coffee and dates. Did you know you are supposed to eat an odd number of dates?

We had fun dressing up in the colours of the Oman flag and families went to extraordinary lengths to try and include foods, containers and even water bottles in the colour of the day. We saw red bread and pancakes and green pancakes, as well as lots of beautiful fruits and vegetables. Popcorn was popular on our white day.

Some of the other teachers in the school visited us at different times during the week. Ms Sahar told us a story in Arabic with an important message about being satisfied and grateful for what we have. Ms Khadija translated the story into English for some of us.

Mr Aamer showed us the art to making the formal headdress worn by men in Oman.

Ms Eiman and some very capable Grade 6 leaders gave us a tour of the exhibits they have displayed in the atrium of LC3. Viewing the artefacts from Oman supported our current unit of inquiry superbly.

We saw some of the traditional woven artefacts and had a go at doing our own weaving with paper. After reading the story of Arachne the talented weaver from Greek mythology last week, it was timely to do some weaving ourselves. Grade 3 applied their skill with patterning very well when weaving.
Another fun thing we did this week was experience playing the popular Omani game Keram. Many Omani households have this game and we had a ‘ball’ playing it in small groups. It was quite good for our Maths too.

And of course we were also participating in the walkathon this week. Many students chose to run for some of the time each day to enable them o complete more laps. By the end of the week some students had noticed that there fitness has improved over the past 2 weeks.

It has been an eventful and enjoyable Oman Week for us.
