This week Grade 11 have been working on their skills of critical analysis, specifically focusing on how textual events and characters can be interpreted in different ways. As we continue on our journey into ‘The Taming of the Shrew,’ the piratical Petruchio has declared his intention to marry the fiery tempered Katharina, due in the main to her large dowry… His direct approach does not go down very well, as you can see from the reaction shot included. The students were asked to consider whether Petruchio’s ham-fisted ‘courtship’ of the Lady could be interpreted as pure comedy or whether we should regard him as a brutal monster. Grade 11 had a similar reaction to Katharina on that score! We shall see how the wedding turns out next week…
