As part of their UOI on energy, grade four created small “solar ovens” which they then used to heat water. Using different coloured paper to also see which was the best for heating water, students tested the temperature of their water every ten minutes. Here are some of their thoughts: “the darker the colour, the higher the temperatures go” – Nathalie.
“The water got warmer because if somebody puts the box directly to the sun, it will heat up.” – Abdul
“I noticed the darker colours go higher more quickly” – Janine
“The dark colours go higher” – Kalea
Students are looking at how energy can be harnessed and what may change (such as things becoming hotter) as a result. They have spontaneously and independently started talking about how to use energy in a responsible way.
