This week we finally reached the conclusion of our literary text for DP Language Acquisition: ‘Things Fall Apart’ by China Achebe. The novel’s protagonist, Okonkwo, exemplifies the struggle of native cultures to persist in their traditions in the face of European imperialism. Never a very likable or relatable character, especially given the treatment of his wives and children, we nevertheless felt a pang on his behalf as we discussed the novel’s brutal climax in our live lesson. There should be plenty to talk about in our Internal Assessments next year!
