Conventions are the roof of our writing house. They protect our awesome ideas and careful organization.

We inquired into punctuation and capital letters. First we Tuned in to see what we
already knew….we knew about capitals and full stops, but not about the other stuff!

To Find Out, we looked for examples of conventions in books.

To Sort Out, we made sure that we underlined the correct things. Also, we made sure the sentences we wrote were neat enough for others to read. If they were not, we took them off.

We Went Further by thinking about why those conventions were there. We summarized what we learned by writing it down and thinking about how we would share what we learned with the class.

To make conclusions, we presented what we learned to the class. You can see that on our websites!

To Take Action, we decided that we needed to remember these rules in our writing.

We can also practice what we have learned when we read at home. You can do this inquiry in your head and talk about your thinking . Find the punctuation you’re interested in and start asking questions: Why is there a comma there? Why is that word capitalized? Why did the author start a new paragraph? And so on. You’ll be surprised at how many answers come to you when you get in the habit of asking questions when you read!
