The Science Fair is coming…. so the Grade 4 and 5 teachers decided to dedicate a STEAM session to measurement. (The M in STEAM stands for Maths). Armed only with a carrot and an instruction sheet, teams measured themselves, furniture around the classrooms and some parts of the play equipment. Some teams even measured Mr Avila and Mr Eriks, only to discover that their height depended on how long the groups’ carrots were. By doing this activity we learnt the importance of standard units of measure and the accuracy needed for measuring. We also learnt about measuring prefixes. If there are 100cm in a metre, there would be 100 centicarrots in a carrot. Great fun was had by all and the school goats appreciated the carrots at the end.
