Recently the Grade 5’s undertook their first spelling word sort.

Having been given a number of words on pieces of paper the students were asked to sort them into groups of their choosing. They were able to complete a sound sort (long vs short vowel sounds) or a pattern sort (words ending in KE vs words ending in CK). My aim was for students to recognise that short vowel sounds will be followed by CK while long vowel sounds will be followed by KE.
