Reading out loud is a performance! We are learning this not only when we listen to The BFG, but also when we practice our play, Jungle Rock. To make sure our audience enjoys our reading, we need to remember to practice and keep an eye out for punctuation. It really helps is to know when to breathe, when to pause and what kind of expression to use.
Also, we need to think about what is happening in the story. That way, we can infer what the character is feeling. Having empathy for the character (imaging how we would feel if we were the character) helps us choose what kind of expression we need to put in our voices.
Practice this at home when reading! Point out how punctuation and inferring helps you and your child to read like a rock star. Also, check out the class having a go at it in their website.
