All IB Diploma students (grades 11 and 12) are required to write an original piece of mathematical work as part of their coursework. This piece of work is called the Maths Exploration.

Grade 11 students were introduced to the Exploration during Oman week when they read through the criteria and marked sample papers as a way of testing their understanding. Last week, they returned another round of self-marked papers and are demonstrating significant understanding of what is expected.

Grade 12 students are currently completing their Explorations based on discussions and feedback received this week. The big challenge that they are facing is their desire to write a paper before they have actually completed the exploring of the math. Like a science experiment which needs to be completed before the lab report can be written, a mathematical exploration must be completed before the paper is written.
