We have had another fantastic and engaging week of learning! Here is a look at what our students have been exploring across our subjects:
🔢 Math: Addition Strategies & Fast Mental Math
We worked on different addition strategies to help us solve math problems quickly and accurately. The students practiced mental math skills to add single-digit numbers in their heads. We also practiced “subitizing”—a fancy math word for training our eyes to instantly recognize small groups of items without counting them one by one (just like knowing a die 🎲 shows a ‘5’ without counting each dot!).
🎒 Unit of Inquiry: The 10-Minute Challenge
To launch our new unit, we started with a thought-provoking challenge! Students found a mystery backpack containing a water bottle, radio, blanket, rain poncho, a can of tuna, and a flashlight—alongside a note saying they had only 10 minutes to grab their things and leave. This sparked a wonderful class discussion as students analyzed whether the right items were packed and what is truly essential.
✍️ Writing: Building Better Sentences
In writing, we focused on learning and reviewing the main building blocks of sentences. We looked at:
-
Nouns: Naming words for people, places, or things.
-
Verbs: Action words that show what is happening.
-
Adjectives: Describing words that give details about nouns.
-
Adverbs: Words that describe how, when, or where an action happens.
📚 Reading: Reading at Our Level
In reading, students focused on practicing with books suited to their personal reading levels. Working with “just right” books helps every child build confidence, strengthen their comprehension, and foster a love for reading.
Thank you for your continued partnership and support at home. Have a wonderful and relaxing break!
