In UOI, students took the strategies they found most useful during our mindfulness stations and created their own Self-Care Menus. The appetizers are short 1–2 minute strategies, the main courses are longer strategies (5–10 minutes), and the desserts are things that make them happy once they are calm. We hope these menus will be a tool students can use throughout the year when they feel angry, overwhelmed, sad, or even overly excited.

Students then put their strategies into action through role-plays. They first acted out a negative loop, such as becoming angry during a football game, and then recreated the situation using one of the strategies from their Self-Care Menu to change what happened next.

In maths, we focused on rounding numbers to the nearest 10, 100, and 1,000, using number lines to support our thinking. We also explored what happens to the value of a digit when it moves one place to the right (dividing by 10) or one place to the left (multiplying by 10), before applying this understanding to multiplying and dividing by 100 and 1,000. In writing, students continued developing their personal narratives, really focusing on their small moment and adding description and sensory details to help the reader feel as though they are experiencing the moment alongside them.

Looking Ahead

Next week, we will wrap up our unit of inquiry by connecting our learning back to our central idea: Understanding and managing our feelings helps us build a healthy self-concept and develop resilience. We will also continue working on our personal narratives, focusing on revising and editing. Students will give and receive peer feedback before using it to create their final drafts.
