This Week in Grade 3: We put on our nutritionist hats, explored how fuel powers our bodies, and practiced uncovering main ideas in non-fiction texts.

Unit of Inquiry: Expert Nutritionist Call & Body Fuel

  • Virtual Guest Speaker: We had a fantastic interactive session with a guest nutritionist who taught us all about how food provides energy, growth, and body repair.
  • The Big 3 Macronutrients: Students discovered how Carbohydrates give us energy to play, Proteins help us build and repair tissue, and healthy Fats support our brain.
  • Eating the Rainbow: We explored how colorful fruits and vegetables (red, orange, yellow, green, and purple) provide essential vitamins and minerals to keep our systems healthy.
  • Water is a Super Drink: Learned how staying hydrated helps us concentrate, keeps us cool, and supports digestion.
  • Healthy Meal Challenge: Put our knowledge into practice by designing balanced “Healthy Breakfasts” that combine carbs, protein, and colorful foods.

Reading: Main Idea & Supporting Details

  • Uncovering the “Big Idea”: Practiced identifying the central main idea in informational texts about body systems and health—learning to spot the main point an author is making.
  • Hunting for Evidence: Focused on pulling out key supporting details, facts, and examples that give us more information about the main idea.
  • Using Text Features: Used headings, bold vocabulary words, and diagrams to quickly locate where the main ideas and important facts were hiding on the page.

Self-Management & Classroom Community

  • Time Management Focus: Practiced key self-management skills by setting personal goals and focusing on staying on task to complete work within the allotted time.
  • Active Listening & Curiosity: Showed wonderful learner profile traits by asking thoughtful questions before our nutritionist interview and supporting peers during quiet writing blocks.
