Spanish classes at ABIS continue to make steady progress, and it has been wonderful to see our students becoming increasingly engaged and enthusiastic about learning this beautiful language.
G11 Spanish ab initio
We are continuing with our unit on Identities. This week, we have started becoming familiar with vocabulary related to family relationships, while also engaging in metacognitive discussions about what it means to learn to talk about our families in a foreign language. We have reflected on the ways in which human beings connect with one another and on how our families contribute to shaping who we are.
At the same time, we continue to acknowledge and work through the challenges of learning a third or even fourth language for many of our students, particularly when the language they use as a bridge for learning Spanish is not even their mother tongue. These experiences encourage students to think more consciously about how languages interact and how we use everything we already know to build new linguistic knowledge.
G12 Spanish ab initio
Our G12 ab initio students are continuing with the first unit of Year 2. This week, we have focused on learning how to tell anecdotes about experiences that have shaped us. As we practise the past tenses, we are also exploring how our past experiences can influence who we are today.
We continue to make purposeful use of translanguaging, encouraging students to reflect on the multiple ways in which ideas and expressions in Spanish can be communicated in English, and on the choices involved when moving between languages.
G12 Spanish B
Our G12 Spanish B student continues to prepare for the Individual Oral. This week, we have focused on the pretérito imperfecto and pretérito indefinido, exploring how these past tenses can help us make meaningful references to Hispanic cultures as well as to our own personal experiences and life stories.
Spanish classes at ABIS continue to grow, and we are seeing a growing enthusiasm among our students for discovering, using and enjoying this wonderful language. It is a pleasure to see their confidence develop as they realise that learning a language is not only about words and grammar, but also about understanding ourselves, connecting with others and exploring the world from different perspectives.
